It Begins...
I was bored, saw a banner ad for TVS and clicked on it. (BIG MISTAKE). Found myself a Boraxian, 50 ticks into Beta 3. Like a good n00b, I ignored the manual and proceeded to tell everyone how to play the game, seeing as I know everything and all. The silence was deafening but one message did filter through, "stop being a wanker and come to Krilgore". So I rushed off and once again impressed the elders by calling out my damage, firing at the base in my level 1 fighter. Krilgore fell, comms were scrambled; I read the manual and took my fighter to NSA in order to find the supplies mentioned in it, (Chuckle....n00bs). Lost my first ship, took a cloaker and buggered off intent on going rogue. While waiting for the button to appear, I hypered about in enemy space cloaking in and out of fleets, gathering info. It turned out to be a lot of fun and seeing as Morgana had no scans, it was rather useful. So I decided not to go rogue and Shiid and I formed the 123rd recon squadron, a bunch of low level cloakers with the sole intention of providing intel. Together we figured out all the tricks a cloaker can do, some of which turned out to be bugs ;). Sitting in quietly on enemy fleet battles and just reporting taught me a hell of a lot about targeting and timing, lessons I later used to win TVS in command.
Low/Highlights:
* Tracking the Jaxies everywhere they went & pinning their LC * Getting spanked by Mabont for 6200 damage! * The first Boraxian Meat Grinder (sucked) * The game reset after we nailed Ajaxus (sucked, it killed us) * Being part of the wolfpack sent to nail the first ever cruiser (Tibs: Faulcon) * Seeing the way the Boxxies fought to the end hardcore in Boraxus (no base defense in those days -> we got spanked over and over, often many times in one tick)
Beta3 Frantic 1 -
Boxxie again with LC Rebbie. We kicked tail then made a cardinal mistake and overextended when people needed sleep. Got nailed in the counter attack and lost Rebbie. I recognized what I would later call the blob, led by Morgana and tried like hell to get people to stop trying to fight it. They didn't listen and 'The Boraxian Meat Grinder II' was formed. Once the base was clearly going down, good ol' Morgana sent a wolfpack to come and get me (thinking I was the LC :P). I planned my escape to perfection, let them fire locking them in then take a random gate I knew about. But with an average shot of 1000 on me, I never got that chance. (Learned about mega-damage ticks). Went rogue and had a bucketload of fun.
Low/Highlights:
* Having no-one listen and watching them all die * Being killed by me good mate Freelance :( * Grabbing a random gate as a rogue right into the middle of an enemy fleet (6+ cruisers), taking a few shots at Neo just out of spite, then finding a random gate on the last move and laughing so hard I almost died * The impromtu formation of the first rogue squad in Tara's after I found Wingee sleeping and put out the word * Getting the killshot on Wingee in the frantic he said he absolutely would not die in :P * Figuring out every special gate in the game, including the uncharted sector * Creating the term 'blob' and writing the strategy in detail. (Including how to beat it which no-one ever tries). * Making it from level 1 to 5 as a rogue. (I consider this the REAL test of a player).
Beta 3 - Frantic 2 -
Went rogue again because it was so much fun last time. Got killed and found myself a Tib. Everyone sat and the game was going nowhere. Wingee was going to end it so Ginger and I put a rocket under peoples' butts. We took command with a few others in a great, democratic group. (Freelance, David, Darth_Fool, Ginger and me). And the rest was history, we adopted the blob strategy and kicked ass.
Low/Highlights:
* Getting the kill shot on all three bases * Trying to kill our own base after we all turned rogue * Getting top score (Freelance and I were neck and neck all the way) * Almost getting most kills. Stile ended up leaving me for dead with triple figures * Writing an updated manual with sector stories and legion descriptions.
Beta 4a -
Morgana was instantly elected LC and picked me as VR which would last the game. We followed standard strategy and went to the early roids battle. But no-one followed and Hexxia's targeting saw us both killed in one tick. From there it went bad and the Tibs destroyed us big-time. Never seen a legion so far behind at that point of the game. But the Tibs didn't have enough bombing power to take the base and we waited patiently for them to leave. When they did, we blobbed them with our pathetic fleet. It worked. I took everything I'd learned and applied it, which turned out to be just what Morgana thought too and the rest was history. We only had two vets, (Ragnon and Vedite), the rest were n00bs but we totally dominated, blobbing around the outer ring and going from doomed to victory in about 120 ticks. (A record I think). That team was really damn tight.
Low/Highlights:
* Getting the second carrier. Vedite beat me by ONE tick :P * Finding out that carriers were buggy heaps of crap that repaired worse than a level 3 * Going from 1&2 in the rankings down down down because carriers suck * Being in command of such an awesome team of n00bs * Inventing the full universe scan table * Missing one tick the entire game and paying for lack of sleep badly * Achieving the most unlikely and rapid victory in TVS history (thanks Tibs)
EoC Online Wingee asked some TVS vets to test a new game called EoC before it went live. We had a lot of fun flying around, looking for bugs. When the game went live I renamed myself SheikYrBouti and found myself on a MCS with all the familiar TVS names, The_Zen, Shiid, Blackadder, Wingee and Ginger, etc. We all ruled outselves out as FC's because we're not stupid and got lucky when Isle* was elected. The best damn leader I've seen. We kicked ass, but inevitably, Isle* burned out and unfortunately got replaced by a nameless idiot who undermined the entire team, lost our scans within one tick of getting them and seemed to be actively sabotaging us. It's amazing how much damage one ***wit can do. That ended my EoC experience. Also tested It's War and had a great time looking for and making use of 'exploits' ;). Wrote an overly lengthy manual for it too but dunno what happened to that. The End? Well kids, games are a waste of time, spend your time doing something worthwhile. I realized this and quit playing computer games entirely, giving away my damn fine RuneScape player. But the TVS community holds a permanent place in my memory, especially the mob from Beta3. I dunno, something about an older crowd that just makes it seem like family. Popped in to most of the Betas since then to have a look under various names but never played actively. Watched the game change, becoming crapper IMO. Most of the old aggressive players seemed to fade away like I did and be replaced by more conservative types, making the game drag out and become boring. Everyone seemed to just use my blob tactic and noone had the flair to break it which really disappointed me. Blobs can be beaten as easily as they form... A return? Well, I dunno why but I started playing actively in Beta 15. Joined in about tick 70, skipped another 30 on vacation, but still managed to get some command ideas across to the Tibs. The game is still in progress with Tibs just taking out the first base...
And thus concludes yet another long Caesar created post. (Just for Ginger).
