Starting Game: Beta 5
Intended Role: Space Superiority
Founding Pilots: Talon and dixi
Original Legion: Krilgorian
The 525th Talons started life as an experiment. What would happen if you combined the firepower of a number of active high-level all-combat Microw fighters (resulting in a lethal attacking combination) with a few active high-level all-repair repairships dedicated to keeping the fighters in good condition. What actually resulted was a squadron feared by all the other legions of beta 5 as a lethal squadron to engage, with their reputation cemented by an early battle in Tripe, where the outnumbered 525th engaged a large portion of the Boraxian fleet, and was actually winning before the remainder of the Kril fleet arrived to put the battle beyond doubt. Although their effectiveness was lessened later when the other legions realised that the squadron's pilots had no pilot skill (and hence were very easy to damage in the all-but-defenceless Microw fighter), and the lack of pilot skill made combat in the Asteroid Fields or enemy homeworlds almost prohibitively dangerous for the squadron, they nonetheless were possibly the best-known (and arguably most effective) squadron of beta 5.
Despite this acheivement, the squadron was never effectively re-formed in subsequent betas, with the combination of somewhat-foolhardy active pilots and the Krilgorian Microw fighter never being satisfactorily repeated.
