Hazards

Don't hang around too long or you might end up like the locals. Significant radiation hazard with a tranquilizing effect on pilot's minds thereby reducing the effectiveness of attacks and repairs.

History

Tripe was discovered completely by accident in the year 2102 when the Ajaxian research ship "Tripper IX" testing a new form of energy pickup became the first ship to make a random hyperjump. In the days prior to the discovery of New Sector Alpha, space travel, whilst possible, was still restricted by availability of energy / fuel. For days, the ship had sat in Apollo Sector testing a device for magnifying gravity waves and applying the energy to the hyperdrives. The team was close to giving up when unexpected success provided a sudden boost to their hyperdrive and sent them to the new sector. The equipment is now a standard addition to the pickup array of all craft, but is unfortunately still completely random because try as they might, no one has ever figured out any relationship between the waves and the destination sector, or even a reliable way of amplifying the right type of wave.

Upon arriving in the sector and checking their readouts, the team soon realized that it was indeed a new sector. The excitement soon abated as the readouts were comprehended and it was realised just how much radiation the lightly shielded craft was being exposed too. Being in a new sector meant that no hyper gates out of it were immediately known forcing them to stay and search for them. Resigning herself to the fact that she was probably going to die from radiation exposure before she could escape, the chief scientist, one Professor Ertimus Mayne, scornfully remarked, "goddamn, stupid freakin' sector......what a load if tripe", to which everyone agreed and the name stuck.

The main feature in the system is an odd star (pictured) that is in a word, psychedelic. Unfortunately the impressive light performance it provides is accompanied by extremely high levels of radiation. Although the system has several orbiting planets capable of sustaining some form of life (with some terraforming help), the radiation has resulted in a completely sterile system.

The crew of "Tripper IX" actually found all three hypergates out of the sector within 3 days and sent the information home, a truly amazing feat, no doubt driven by desperation, but for reasons unknown did not actually hyper out. Continual attempts to contact the ship failed and it was assumed that all was not well. A rescue team from Ajaxus was dispatched and used the new gate to hyper into the sector where it located "Tripper IX" and tugged it home. Aboard the research ship, the crew were found to be alive and well, suffering only mild physical damage from radiation exposure. Unfortunately, they had all gone completely insane, babbling incoherently about the wonders of the universe, the need for universal peace and the folly of trying to ram Ajaxian policy down everyone's throats. Clearly insane the entire crew was committed to the best high security nuthouse on Ajaxus Prime where their dangerous and bizarre peaceful activities could be monitored.

Tripe was officially given an 'avoid' rating and whilst ships frequently travelled through, unless they had heavy radiation shielding were not advised to stay. Those ships that did spend time in the sector through repairing and attacking noticed that the effectiveness of these actions were reduced. Inevitably, ignoring the warnings issued by the Ajaxian government, more pilots began to experience the bizarre peace loving lunacy inducing affects of the sector and psychiatrists found themselves in short supply on Ajaxus, enjoying the payrise that associated this fact.

In the year 2115, in a manner that has baffled everyone ever since, almost every single Tripe induced psychiatric case managed to simultaneously escape their institutions and led by the original basket case, Professor Ertimus Mayne managed to hijack a rickety old colony ship, loaded up with lower class citizens for the journey to Garen, and grabbed a random hypergate arriving straight in Tripe. Distracted by war with the Tibrans, the Ajaxian authorities did not bother to chase after the ship.

Much to the amusement of all legions who knew about it, the "Trippers" as they had now become known landed on the most suitable planet orbiting Tripe and set up their terraforming equipment. Much to the amazement of everyone, they not only lived but actually seemed to be aging far slower than normal.

Ever since then Tripe has maintained a small, eclectic and highly eccentric population. Mostly sterile as a result of the radiation, the population depends mainly upon immigrants to maintain it's size and yet even with this limitation it still seems to be growing. The radiation steriliises the vast majority of life making farming and stock herding very difficult but not completely impossible because for some reason, aside from psychological affects, sterility is the only thing that really seems to be affected.

No one knows exactly why the radiation does what it does to people because every researcher who has ever made an attempt to study the effects ends up becoming a "Tripper". Those people most susceptible to the effects of Tripe radiation tend to be of above average intelligence and of middle age. All legions have lost a great deal of scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, pilots, doctors and other talented professionals to the sector. As a consequence the population is incredibly gifted when compared to any other population in the universe.

To the outside eye there appears to be no government of any form, with the "Trippers" living in some kind of giant commune. In reality there us a sort of unspoken hierarchy arranged according to those who are best attuned with and speak best the "Tripper" philosophy being loosely that of peace, harmony, and praise of light.

Generally speaking the Trippers live life in a constant drug enhanced haze doing nothing more than enjoying life, but that said, their technological prowess and rate of development is second to none and when analysed in terms of technological development per head of capita, Tripe is streets ahead. It seems that in combination with above average intelligence, the drug induced visions and moments of clarity aid members of the population in making technological advances.

In a system that is essentially sterile, it is the fertile minds of Trippers that produce the technology and products they can trade for basic essentials like food. Trippers are also known for producing psychotropic drugs of unique quality which although highly illegal are sought after by many pilots to make dull times in space a little more exciting.

Tripe space is littered with various technological projects ranging from the bizarre to the brilliant. The exact extent of Tripper technological prowess is unknown. Captured Trippers talk meaningless rubbish and have yet to divulge anything interesting. Captured technology is also no good because it is usually far to advanced to be understood and the only people who can almost always seem affected by the brilliance of what they see and make a trip to Tripe to meet the creators, in turn becoming Trippers themselves. There have been attempts in the past to steal Tripper blueprints from their factories however none have ever been found. It seems that all designs are stored mentally by the population, some have even suggested that the reason for captured Trippers being so useless is that individual members remember certain parts of a design but never the entire thing. By working together they are able to piece together a working plan and design something from it. Some have even suggested that the radiation has given Trippers telepathic powers.

Aside from elicit substances, the main source of income for the Trippers is the "Tipper Trooper", the massive carrier designed and built locally. The cash this ship brings in alone is enough to buy a large fleet. Their secondary source of income is from the Repairships they also make for each legion. The Trippers use most of this cash to import the resources that fuel their often ridiculous technological projects. The bulk of their cash is spent importing rare and expensive minerals which they do so in enormous quantities. No one knows exactly what they do with these minerals but the suppliers aren't complaining. Over the years it is estimated that the Trippers have imported more mass of raw materials than is actually present in the entire sector. Somehow it seems to be vanishing.

In the past many have tried to attack Tripper colonies and outposts but all attempts have failed. Lasers fired seem to disperse and bombs dropped seem to never make it. Landing craft also seem to run into some strange force field that simply prevents them from moving any closer to the planet, even though all instruments indicate that the ship is in fact moving. Tripper ships, armed with absolutely no weaponry should be easy targets, but to this day no one has ever managed to destroy, or even hit one. Tripper ships seem to have similar portable protection to the homeworld and when cornered simply vanish to appear elsewhere in the universe and sometimes to even disappear of the map entirely, no one knows where but it is assumed the Trippers know of new sectors. The sector, being a quadrant sector is known to effect attacks and repairs in a negative way, but the radiation also effects the minds of any pilot in the sector in a watered down way to how it affects the Trippers. Even Krilgorians cannot resist the tranquilizing influence of the sector's radiation and as such all attacks and repairs are made less effective.

It seems the Trippers have become masters of manipulating space, and they use their knowledge to protect themselves from the most powerful of foes. Their shielding and hyperdrive secrets are not available to anyone other than Trippers for good reason. They need to protect their way of life and that means keeping an edge over those who would destroy them.

As it stands today, Tripe is simply a frustration point for the various legions. The legions are frustrated by the poor attacks and repairs in the sector, by the fact that they keep losing their brightest minds to Tripper philosophy, by the loss of effectiveness of their own pilots due to excessive consumption of Tipper chemical substances, by the fact that Trippers keep selling Carriers to anyone and by the fact that all attempts to gain Tripper technological secrets and / or destroy the Tipper colonies have failed miserably. The various legions now leave the Trippers alone because it is a complete waste of time attacking them and that's just fine with the Trippers, because all they want is to be left in peace and to not be dragged into any war for dominance.
